Does ChatGPT read your Google Business Profile?

When someone asks an AI assistant "who should I hire?", it answers from public business data — your profile, your reviews, your hours, your categories. Most profiles are half-finished. Six free fixes, twenty minutes, no tools to buy.

01

Claim and verify your profile if you haven'tAn unclaimed profile is read-only — you can't fix hours, categories, or photos until you own it. Claiming is free and takes a few minutes. Everything below assumes you can edit.

02

Make the basics boring and accurateName, address, phone, website, hours — exactly as they appear on your website and in the major directories. Machines cross-check sources; every mismatch (old phone, holiday hours never updated) is a small trust penalty.

03

Pick the right categories and list your servicesYour primary category is how assistants classify what you do; secondary categories and the services list fill in the detail. If you offer it, list it — "water heater repair" beats "plumber" when someone asks about water heaters.

04

Add real photos, not stockYour storefront, your crew, your work — dated, geotagged, captioned. Assistants can't see photos the way you do, but the freshness and completeness of a profile is a signal of an active, real business.

05

Answer your reviews — all of themReviews are the loudest public data an assistant reads. Thank the five-stars, respond to the complaints, and while you're at it, ask recent happy customers to leave one. A reviewed business reads like a trusted one.

06

Fill in the Q&A and business descriptionUse the description to say what you do, where, and for whom — in the words customers actually use. Answer or seed the Q&A section the same way. This is the closest thing to telling the machine what to quote about you.

Quick answers

Is my Google Business Profile really what AI assistants read?

AI assistants draw on publicly available business data — your profile, your reviews, your directory listings, your website. Your Google Business Profile is the one source of that data you fully control, so it's the right place to start.

I don't have a Google Business Profile. Does this page still help?

Claim one first — it's free. The fixes above (accurate hours, service categories, real photos, answered reviews) make sense on every listing you control, not just Google's.

How long before AI assistants pick up my corrections?

There's no fixed timeline — assistants refresh their sources on their own schedule. Treat every correction as cumulative: each fix makes your public record more consistent, and consistency is what machines trust.
