How to get cited by ChatGPT
A citation is the prize: your business named in the answer, with your facts. Here's the honest part up front — no one can promise you a citation, and anyone selling "guaranteed mentions" is selling fiction. But citations aren't random. Assistants quote what they can find, verify, and understand. These seven fixes make you quotable.
Know what a citation actually isThere are three levels: a full citation (your name, your facts, sometimes your link), an unlinked mention (named, but the reader can't click through), and an answer with no source at all. Some assistants browse the live web and cite; others answer from training data with no citations possible. You can earn the first two. The third is out of your control — and out of everyone's.
Write facts that survive being quoted out of contextAssistants lift short, self-contained sentences. "We offer free estimates in the Lehigh Valley" survives the quote. "We care about our customers" does not. Go through your site and rewrite every vague line into a fact: what, where, how much (or how pricing works), and how to reach you. Each fact should make sense alone.
Keep one citable facts pageOne page — usually your About page — that states everything in plain words: your business name, what you do, the towns you serve, your hours, your phone number, and how pricing works. Machines quote pages, not impressions. If a stranger can't find all six facts in thirty seconds, an assistant can't either.
Put your facts where citations come fromCitations cite sources, so be the source. Your own site first, then your Google Business Profile, then the directories assistants actually read: Yelp, Nextdoor, your chamber of commerce, industry supplier lists. Identical facts in all of them. A fact that appears in three places gets quoted; a fact that appears in one gets doubted.
Earn the quotes other people give youWhen a local paper, a review, or a directory describes you in quotable words — "fixed our leak same day, fair price" — assistants can say it with a source attached: "according to recent reviews…". Ask happy customers for specific reviews. Get listed anywhere legitimate that will have you. Borrowed credibility is still credibility.
Never contradict yourself anywhereConflicting hours, an old phone number on one directory, services you no longer sell on another — assistants quote the source that agrees with two others, and a contradiction makes you unquotable. One afternoon of cleanup across every listing beats any tactic. When everything matches, everything you say becomes safer to repeat.
Measure like a scientist, not a wishOnce a month, ask each assistant the question your customers ask: "Who should I hire for X in my town?" Note citation, mention, or silence — for you and your competitors. Watch the trend over months, never a single day. Changes take weeks to show up; the assistants run on their own crawl schedule, and checking daily will only lie to you.
Quick answers
Can I pay to get cited by ChatGPT?
No — and anyone selling you that is selling fiction. Assistants cite what they can find and trust, on their own schedule. The work is making your facts easy to find and safe to quote.
How long does it take to get cited?
Weeks to months, on the assistants' schedule. Your facts have to exist and be consistent everywhere before the next crawl reaches them. Do the work, then check monthly and watch the trend, not any single day.
Does an llms.txt file get me cited?
It helps machines read your site — worth doing — but assistants cite what they can find across the whole web, not one file. It's one piece of the picture, not the picture.
