How AI search picks your painter

When the trim is peeling and someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini "find me a painter near me," the assistant doesn't pick at random — it reads what's findable about every painting company in town and names the ones it can describe with confidence. Here are the seven painting-specific things it reads, and how to fix each one yourself. No one can promise you a recommendation. But every one of these is fixable by you, for free.

01

A page for every job type, not a "Services" bullet list"Exterior house painter near me," "interior painter cost," "cabinet refinishing," "commercial painting contractor" — assistants match these real queries to real pages. One Services page listing interiors, exteriors, cabinets, deck staining, drywall, pressure washing, and color consulting in a single breath is not a match. One focused page per thing you genuinely do is the highest-leverage visibility work a painting company can do.

02

Estimates and ballparks in plain text"How much does it cost to paint a house?" is one of the most-asked assistant questions in the whole trade — and it fails for every company that hides every number behind a contact form. Publish your per-room interior ranges, whole-exterior ballparks by square footage, cabinet-refinishing pricing, and what's included in a typical quote. The assistant can only quote what you actually wrote down.

03

Prep and process described in words"Why is one painting quote double the other?" is a question assistants answer constantly — and the answer is prep: scraping, sanding, caulking, priming, masking, two-coat systems. If your site never names your prep process, the assistant can't explain why your work costs more and lasts longer than the cheap bid. Write the process out. It's your cheapest differentiator, and it's invisible unless it's in text.

04

Real before-and-after photos from your jobsPainting is the visual-proof trade: a faded yellow ranch turned clean white, kitchen cabinets that went from oak to satin navy. Homeowners pick the painter whose transformations they can already see. Publish before-and-afters from your actual jobs — your crew, your towns — not stock photos of staged interiors. The humans reading the answer convert on proof, and the machines corroborate real businesses with real photos.

05

Licensed, insured, and warranty — as quotable facts"Is the painter insured?" and "do they warranty the work?" are among the first questions assistants get asked about painters, because your crew is inside someone's home with ladders and solvents. If your state or city requires a contractor license, name it in text. Say plainly whether you're insured and whether the workmanship carries a warranty, and for how long. A credential the assistant can read is a credential it can cite.

06

Reviews that name the project"They painted our whole exterior — cedar siding, trim, shutters — and finished in four days with zero mess" is the trust signal machines lean on. "Great work!!" tells nobody anything. Ask satisfied customers, and make it easy — a short link or QR code on the final invoice. A steady trickle of specific reviews beats a burst of five-star one-worders.

07

Lead-safe certification and service areas as towns, not "serving the greater area"If you work on homes built before 1978, EPA lead-safe (RRP) certification is a real, quotable credential — say so in text where it applies. And painting is a local trade: assistants match "painter in Allentown" to pages that actually say Allentown. Name your towns and zip codes on the page, keep them consistent with your Google Business Profile service areas, and stop pretending geography is a secret.

Quick answers

Can ChatGPT recommend my painting company?

No. There is no paid referral slot, ad setting, or profile trick that buys a recommendation — and anyone selling you one is selling fiction. Assistants name the companies they can find, read, and trust. This page is about making that information easy to find.

We stay booked on word-of-mouth from realtors. Isn't that enough?

Realtor referrals are invisible to assistants. And painting demand arrives in seasonal spikes — the spring exterior season, pre-sale makeovers in the moving months — when thousands of homeowners ask the assistant "who paints houses near me" all at once. Whoever has a real page for that exact job gets named. Word-of-mouth fills your crew; published facts make sure the spikes fill it too.
