Why your business doesn't show up in Claude

You asked Claude the exact question your customers ask, and it answered — with your competitor's name. Claude answers from two kinds of knowledge: what it learned during training (frozen at a cutoff date, no live web) and, only when web search is switched on, the live internet. Most people ask with web search off, so they get pure memory — and if your business was never in the training data, it cannot be in the answer. The honest part up front — no one can promise you a mention in Claude, and anyone selling "guaranteed Claude recommendations" is selling fiction. Here are the seven real reasons you're not in the answer, and what each one costs to fix.

01

Your business is younger than Claude's knowledgeDefault chat mode has no live web — everything Claude knows stops at its training cutoff. If your business launched, renamed, or materially changed after that date, its memory literally cannot contain you, and no amount of website work reaches it. Fix: the only door is web search (reasons 03–07 make that door work), plus making sure the NEXT training cycle can find you — which is reasons 02–06 done consistently. Be honest with yourself here: this one has the longest lead time of the seven.

02

You never made it into the training dataTrained memory is built from repetition: the same facts, stated the same way, across many independent sources. If your business's facts exist only on your own website, there was nothing for training to learn — you were never in the memory to begin with. Fix: make your name, address, phone, hours, and services identical everywhere — your site first, then accurate directory profiles, review platforms, and anywhere else the trade is mentioned. Memory is made of repetition, not of one good page.

03

Claude's fetchers aren't allowed on your siteClaude reads the live web through two fetchers: ClaudeBot (the training crawler) and Claude-User (the on-demand fetcher that reads a page when someone asks about it). If your robots.txt blocks either — or your pages are JavaScript walls that render nothing without a browser — Claude never actually reads the page at all. Fix: check that your robots.txt allows both fetchers, and run your key pages through our free AI Crawler Access Checker to see exactly which AI crawlers can reach you.

04

Your page has no quotable answer sentenceClaude compresses sources into short statements — it doesn't paste your paragraphs. If your homepage speaks in generic-adjective soup ("trusted full-service provider committed to excellence"), there is no clean sentence to quote, and the competitor's plain sentence ("Acme Plumbing is a 24/7 emergency plumber in Allentown, PA") wins the slot. Fix: write one plain-English answer sentence near the top of the page — the sentence you'd want quoted back — then expand below it.

05

The web disagrees about your factsClaude is conservative: when sources contradict each other about your phone number, hours, or even the spelling of your business name, it drops the fact rather than guess which source is right. Two phone numbers, three name spellings, hours that say "open" on your site and "closed" on your profile — each contradiction is a reason your competitor's consistent facts get quoted instead. Fix: make your facts identical everywhere, starting with your own site.

06

Nobody else corroborates youClaude leans on third-party evidence when it answers about a business: customer reviews, directory profiles, local press mentions, real customer stories. If the entire web footprint of your business is your own website, there is nothing to cite but you — and the competitor with forty reviews and three accurate directory profiles is the safer source. Fix: earn the footprint. Ask customers for reviews, get listed accurately in real directories, and make sure they all repeat the same facts as your site.

07

Your content reads staleIn web-search mode Claude weighs recency — an undated page from 2022 reads as abandoned next to a competitor's page refreshed this season, especially for anything that changes (hours, prices, services, availability). Fix: visible dates on your content and seasonal refreshes of your service pages. Freshness is how a page says "someone still stands behind this." Our free AI Visibility Grader scores your page the way a machine reader sees it.

Quick answers

Why does Claude recommend my competitor instead of me?

Because your competitor lives in Claude's trained memory and you don't: their facts were repeated consistently across the web during training, their pages state quotable specifics, and third parties corroborate them. It's not about who is better at the trade; it's about whose business survived all the way into the answer.

If I turn on web search in Claude, will it find me then?

Only if your pages are fetchable, quotable, and consistent (reasons 03–07 above). Web search lets Claude read the live web, but it still needs a clean source to quote — a blocked, contradictory, or generic page fails in web-search mode too. Test both modes: most customers ask with search off, so trained memory still matters.

Can I pay to be recommended by Claude?

No. Claude's answers aren't ad placements — there's no slot to buy. The only way in is to be the business its memory and its fetchers can find, quote, and trust, which costs work, not a fee.

How long do fixes take to appear in Claude's answers?

It depends on which knowledge path you mean. In web-search mode, changes can surface in days to weeks once your pages are re-crawled, quotable, and consistent. In trained memory, nothing changes until the next model version is trained — months. Fix the pages, then re-ask in both modes monthly and watch the trend, never a single day.
