Why your business doesn't show up in Google AI Overviews

You Googled your own trade and Google's AI Overview answered — with a neat summary, three little links, and your business nowhere in it. That stings more than losing a ranking, because the Overview now sits above the results you used to fight for — it's the first thing searchers see. The honest part up front — no one can promise you a spot in the Overview, and anyone selling "guaranteed AI Overview placement" is selling fiction. Here are the seven real reasons you're not in the summary, and what each one costs to fix.

01

You're not ranking where the Overview looksAn AI Overview is generated from pages that already rank in Google's results for the query. If you're on page two or three, you're outside the source set entirely — the summary is built from your competitors' pages, not yours. Fix: the unglamorous part comes first — rank on the exact question. Title tags, real content, internal links, and a page that deserves the click.

02

Your page never answers the question directlyThe Overview is a summary of answer-paragraphs, and it quotes the pages that state the answer plainly. If your page buries the answer three scrolls down, implies it in marketing copy, or never says it at all, there's nothing to summarize — a competitor's plain sentence wins. Fix: put one plain-English answer sentence near the top of the page, then expand below it. Write like someone asked you the question out loud.

03

Your content isn't skimmable by a summarizerWalls of unbroken text, no headings, no lists — a page shaped like a brochure gives the model nothing clean to extract. Overviews are stitched from structured content: headings, short paragraphs, bullet lists, a summary box. Fix: real <h2> headings, one idea per paragraph, and a "the short version" box at the top. Our free AI Visibility Grader scores your page the way a machine reader sees it.

04

Your Google Business Profile is thinFor local "best X near me" queries, the Overview pulls business facts from Google's own local index — not your website. A sparse profile with three reviews loses to a competitor's complete one with two hundred, even when your site is better. Fix: complete every profile field, pick the right categories, add real photos, and ask every happy customer for a review. Six fixes in our free Google Business Profile guide.

05

You're stale and the Overview regenerates constantlyOverviews are re-generated per query and skew toward recently-updated sources on anything that changes — hours, prices, seasonal services, availability. An undated page from 2022 reads as abandoned next to a dated competitor page refreshed this season. Fix: visible dates on your content, seasonal refreshes of service pages, a dated offers or news page. Freshness is how a page says "someone still stands behind this."

06

You look less trustworthy than the pages it citesThe summary prefers pages that demonstrate real experience and authority — an about page with actual humans, real customer reviews, local press mentions, credentials stated in text. A thin site with stock photos and no reviews is the risky citation. Fix: show the people behind the business, collect and display real reviews, earn local mentions — and make sure every one of them repeats the same facts about you.

07

The web disagrees about your factsGoogle cross-checks your facts across its index before trusting them in a summary. Two phone numbers, three spellings of your business name, hours that say "open" on your site and "closed" on your profile — contradictions make your facts the risky choice, so the Overview quotes someone consistent instead. Fix: make your name, address, phone, hours, and services identical everywhere — your site first, then your Google Business Profile, then every directory and review platform.

Quick answers

Why does the AI Overview recommend my competitor instead of me?

Because an AI Overview summarizes pages that already rank for the query and answer it directly, and your competitor's page made that source set while yours didn't — usually because it ranks higher, answers the question more directly, or carries stronger trust signals. It's not about who is better at the trade; it's about whose page the summary could be built from.

Is an AI Overview just Google's top 10 results in different words?

Close, but not identical. The Overview is generated from Google's web index and usually links to top-ranking sources, but the wording is the model's own synthesis — and which pages it draws from depends on how well they answer the question, not purely on rank. A page ranking #6 with the clearest answer can out-quote a #1 page that never states it plainly.

Can I pay Google to include my business in the AI Overview?

No. There is no paid inclusion inside AI Overviews — ads sit above or below them, but the Overview itself is organic. The only way in is to be the page Google's index already trusts for the query, which costs work, not a fee.

How long do fixes take to appear in AI Overviews?

Overviews are regenerated per query, so once Google re-crawls your improved pages and you rank and answer well for the question, changes can surface in days to weeks. Fix the pages, then re-run the same search weekly and watch the trend, never a single day.
