Why your business doesn't show up in ChatGPT

You typed your own business name into ChatGPT and it said it doesn't know you — or it recommended your competitors instead. That stings, and it's fixable, but not with tricks. ChatGPT isn't hiding you. It can only recommend what it can read and trust, and most local businesses give it almost nothing to read. The honest part up front — no one can promise you a mention, and anyone selling "guaranteed ChatGPT placement" is selling fiction. Here are the seven real reasons you're invisible, and what each one costs to fix.

01

You never made it into the training dataChatGPT answers most questions from its training data — a snapshot of the web with a cutoff date — not from live browsing. If your business wasn't widely published on the open web before that snapshot, there is simply nothing for it to remember. The fix is unglamorous: publish your business on the open web, consistently, in many places — your site, your Google Business Profile, directories, review platforms, local press. Facts repeated across independent sources are what survive into training data.

02

Your facts live in images, scripts, or behind loginsWhen ChatGPT does browse, its fetchers read page text. If your services are listed in a hero image, your prices sit in a slider, or your booking happens inside a JavaScript widget that needs a login, the fetcher sees a nearly empty page. Put the facts in real text: services, prices, areas served, hours — in the HTML, readable without clicking anything. Our free AI Visibility Grader scores your page the way an AI fetcher sees it.

03

Your name isn't attached to anything quotableChatGPT quotes sentences, not vibes. "We care about our customers and do quality work" carries no business name and no fact — it can't be quoted as an answer about you. "Apex Plumbing installs water heaters across the Lehigh Valley, with free estimates within 24 hours" names the business, states a fact, and survives the quote. Lead every section of your site with a clean, self-contained sentence in your own name. One fact per sentence, your name in it, stated as a plain fact.

04

The web contradicts itself about youThree spellings of your business name, two phone numbers, hours that say "open" on your site and "closed" on your profile — every contradiction is a vote against trusting any of it. Assistants quote facts they're confident in. Audit your name, address, phone, hours, and services everywhere they appear and make them identical: your site first, then Google Business Profile, then every directory and review platform. Mismatches you ignore are mentions your competitors get instead.

05

Your robots.txt or site setup blocks the fetchersChatGPT reads the live web through two agents — GPTBot, which crawls for training, and ChatGPT-User, which fetches a specific page when asked. Both honor robots.txt. A blanket block on AI crawlers ("keep them off my site") also keeps ChatGPT from reading you when someone asks about your trade. Check your robots.txt with our free AI Crawler Access Checker: allow both agents on your public pages. Then make sure the pages actually load for a fetcher — fast, no broken redirects, no bot walls on public content.

06

Nobody else on the web says you existYour own site is your primary source, but it's also the one you control — so it carries the least weight. Assistants trust facts that independent sources confirm: reviews where customers quote your prices and hours, directory listings, local news, trade associations, chamber of commerce. If the only place your business name appears is your own website, there's nothing to corroborate. Collect reviews, get listed, and make sure the facts in them match yours.

07

Your content looks abandonedFor the things ChatGPT fetches live — prices, hours, offers — recency is a trust filter. A page with identical text and no visible date for three years reads as "nobody stands behind this anymore." Refresh service pages seasonally, put visible dates on your content, and keep a dated blog or news page if you can. Fresh, maintained pages are the ones fetchers trust and the ones most likely to make it into the next training-data snapshot.

Quick answers

Why does ChatGPT say it doesn't know my business?

Because in practical terms it doesn't — not the way you mean. Without browsing, it answers from training data with a cutoff date. If your business wasn't widely and consistently published on the open web before that snapshot, there's nothing to remember. When it browses, it only knows what its fetchers can reach and read. "It doesn't know me" almost always means your facts never made it into either channel.

Does ChatGPT use live web search, or just training data?

Both — and it doesn't always browse. It answers many questions from training data alone and browses when a question needs current or verifiable facts, through two agents: GPTBot for training crawls and ChatGPT-User for fetching a specific page on demand. Both honor your robots.txt. You need to be findable in both channels: stable, repeated facts for training data, and crawlable current pages for browsing.

Will paying for ChatGPT Plus make my business show up?

No. A paid OpenAI subscription changes what you can ask, not what the model knows. There is no advertiser tier inside the answers — nobody can buy a mention. Visibility comes from being published, consistent, and crawlable, which costs work, not a subscription.

How long do fixes take to show up in ChatGPT?

Browsing-side fixes can surface quickly — days to weeks — once pages are indexed and fetchable. Training-data answers change only when OpenAI's knowledge is updated, on OpenAI's schedule, over weeks to months. Do the work, then check monthly and watch the trend, never a single day.
